Sports Vacation

It can be overwhelming for so many options to choose domestic and abroad vacation packages. One way to reduce this stress is to figure out what you and or your family want to do. For family vacations, it really depends on the ages of your children. For younger kids, there are theme park vacations, beach vacations, sports vacations, and many more.

For older children, there are just as many vacation adventures that will keep them involved. One of theme is the cultural family vacation. This immerses families in the day to day lives of people from other countries, and you may stay with host families, or working farms, or even volunteer packages. Volunteer vacations allow you to help people of other countries with things like building water ways, and other infrastructures. If gives older kids a sense of accomplishment, as well as ideas on what they may want to do when they grown up.

There are also many different adventure vacation packages available.

Here in the U.S. there are working ranches that invite guests in to experience what a real working ranch is like. This is a great way for city people to experience the other side of life. Many people today, who live and shop in larger metropolitan areas, buy their groceries, but don’t know where milk comes from, or their meat.

What better way to have the experience of a life time than with an adventure vacation? There are African Safaris, trips along the Amazon River, as well as many others. These vacations can be as short as just a few days, or even week long excursions, seeing a variety of different sights at one time. Book these early, space can be very limited.

Big City Travel

Kozhikode: It is also known as Calicut. It has long been dubbed the “City of Spices” from the time immortal, for its role as the major trading point of eastern spices. It has a population of about 0.9 million, making it the third largest urban agglomeration and the third largest city. It ranked as the second best city in India as per the six parameters – health, education, environment, safety, public facilities and entertainment. It was ranked eleventh among Tier-II Indian cities in job creation. It is declared India’s first hunger-free city. It is expected to come under the radar of the IT industry soon with the development of Cyberpark by the government. This will be the third IT ‘Hub’ in Kerala developed on the lines of Thiruvananthapuram Technopark and Kochi InfoPark and is expected to take off by mid 2011. Kozhikode city has been a multiethnic and multi-religious town since early medieval period.

Hindus form the largest religious group, followed by Muslims and Christians.

Kozhikode Sightseeing Places

Kozhikode Beach: The beach is the most popular retreat for locals. It is an unexploited and visually pleasing beach. The ‘Beach Road’ was renamed Gandhi Road from Evan’s Road after Mahatma Gandhi’s visit in January 1934. Two dilapidated piers can be seen extending into the sea. The ‘Iron Screw-pile’ pier to the north was built in 1871, 400 ft long (120 m) with a ‘T’ end.

Veliyangadi (big bazaar): This bazaar has 600 years old history and it is a typical ‘place of interest’ you might like to visit as it has noise, rush and heat on this narrow lane that would test your mettle.

Nevertheless, this ancient market is flourishing and functioning as one of the main commercial center of the city. You may get the best chance to visualize daily life at this commercial hub in medieval Calicut.

Mananchira: It is a large tank in the heart of the city. It has been the drinking water source for the entire Palace complex. There are many important institutions, which surround the Mananchira. The Town Hall was constructed in 1891 by the salt merchants and has been an important stage for agitations and ceremonies during the freedom movement and thereafter. The Pattalapalli or ‘Military Mosque’ was built for the Mysore soldiers who surrounded the Palace during the ‘Mysore invasion’. The Basel Mission from Germany established the Comtrust Textile Factory in 1884. To the western side of Mananchira is located the C.S.I. Church, Basel Mission Complex and the BEM (Basel Evangelical Mission) Girls’ School (1848). There is a well-maintained park called ‘Mananchira Square’. The entire complex is circled by 250 lampposts designed in ‘colonial’ style. The ‘Square’ has an artificial stream, a musical fountain, an open-air theatre and a music stage.

SM Street: It is a happening shopping and commercial lane north of Mananchira Square. The name Sweetmeat is thought to have been derived from a kind of sweet which European traders called ‘Sweetmeat’. S.M. Street is also about 600 years old and mostly occupied by the sweet manufacturers from Gujarat. An abandoned Parsi cemetery named Anjuman was built in the 17th century.

Sarovaram Park: It is an eco-friendly development adjacent to Canoly Canal. The project has been developed with an eco-friendly theme and the construction has been done in traditional Kerala style. It is one of the most popular spots in the city.

Tali Siva Temple: This temple was one of the two Brahmanical royal temples patronized by the Zamorin till today remains one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers in Kozhikode. The temple’s date of origin is uncertain but was most likely built during the foundation of the city in 12th century. The temple is surrounded by gigantic walls of ‘elephant belly’ with broad base and narrower neck at the top. The temple hosts the annual ‘competition for scholars’ called Revathi Pattathanam.

Panniyankara Bhagavati Temple: The Bhagavaty temple on a hillock on the southern side of Kallayi river is one of the two pre-Calicut temples built at least two centuries before the foundation of the city.

Thiruvannur Siva Temple: This ancient and beautiful Siva temple is decorated with typical Chola pillars and pilasters, panjaras and vyalimukhas. The central shrine has escaped any repair or change and is relatively well preserved. An inscription-unearthed record has been dated to 1044 A.D. The deity appears to have been a Jain Tirthankara . The Jain temple must have been converted into a Siva temple sometime in the 11th century.

Kappad Beach: Vasco de Gama landed here at Kappad in 1498. It is located 16 km to the north of Kozhikode along the Kannur road at Tiruvangoor. It has high potential for tourism. A monument erected here commemorates this ‘historic landing’ of vasco De Gama. However, many authors have questioned the emphasis given to the Portuguese sailor who was one amongst hundreds of traders who reached the shores of Calicut and was guided by a Portuguese-speaking Arab. An ancient temple on a hillock, facing the sea, is an added attraction.

Beypore: It is a small port town situated 10 km south of Calicut at the mouth of Chaliyar River. It is famous for its ancient shipbuilding industry that constructed the Uru, trading vessels more popular during the medieval periods and still used by the Arabs and others for commerce and tours. It is one of the important ports of Kerala and has been a major trading center for centuries. The dilapidated Kovilakam (palace) of the Parappanad Rajas and a small Basheer Museum (former house of the writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer) are situated here. There is a big complex that includes a port, a boat yard, a fish landing platform, breakwater project,

Flights

The crash happened at 2.45pm local time (1545 BST) when the jet, which was heading for Las Palmas, in Gran Canaria, attempted to take off.

Witnesses said one of the engines caught fire as the aircraft was leaving the runway. It took to the air momentarily before veering to the right and crashing into the ground between two runways, breaking into two parts.

Reports suggested that the plane had come down on its second attempt to take off.

A civil guard returning from the scene told El País newspaper: “It doesn’t look anything like a plane – it’s horrific. Everything is burnt. It’s the closest to hell that I’ve seen.”

A member of the emergency services described the area as a “war zone.”

Manuel Moleno, a Spanish journalist who was near the area when the accident happened, told the BBC the plane had “crashed into pieces”.

“We heard a big crash,” he said.

“So we stopped, and we saw a lot of smoke.”

There were conflicting reports of the death toll, with the Spanish interior ministry saying that more than 100 people had been confirmed dead so far.

Another 19 were said to be in a critical condition, with 25 having suffered less severe injuries. Two babies were thought to be on board.

Spanair, which is owned by the Scandanavian carrier SAS, had a code-sharing arrangement with the Lufthansa flight LH255.

Seven passengers on board the plane were confirmed as Lufthansa passengers, four from Germany. Spanish radio reported that Swedes and Danes were also believed to have been among the passengers.

The Foreign Office said two British officials were at the airport to find out whether any Britons had been on board.

Hundreds of emergency workers and dozens of ambulances and firefighting vehicles were sent to the scene, along with heavy lifting equipment.

Helicopters and fire trucks dumped water on the plane, which ended up in a wooded area at the end of the terminal four runway. Thick columns of white smoke billowed from the scene.

The airport was closed for a number of hours, with passengers being turned away. Some services are now understood to have resumed.

Reporters at the scene said the terminal building had filled up with people either looking for information about relatives on the flight or caught up in the travel disruption.

Unconfirmed reports said the flight had been due to take off at 1pm and had left the departure gate at 1.05pm, returning just over half an hour later because of technical problems.

A Spanair spokesman said it was too early to confirm why the plane, which was 15 years old and was last serviced in January, had crashed.

He said the company’s thoughts were with those who had been injured and the relatives of those who had died.

“Spanair regrets to confirm that its flight number JK 5022, from Madrid to Las Palmas de Gran Canarias, was involved in an incident at Madrid today,” the spokesman said.

“On board were 164 passengers and nine crew members. JK is a code share flight with Lufthansa LH 2554.

“Spanair is doing everything possible to assist the Spanish authorities at this difficult time, and has established a local helpline number for relatives or friends of those who may have been on board.”

An official with the Madrid emergency rescue service said crews were removing the dead and injured from the wreckage. “It is certain catastrophe,” he added.

The US national transportation safety board said it was sending an investigation team to Madrid to help with the crash investigation because the aircraft is American-made.

Spanish media reported that the plane’s black boxes had already been found.

Beach Vacation

Family vacations are a wonderful source of memories and tradition. While there are many exotic and beautiful destination choices, our family’s favorite vacation spot is on the West Coast of Florida. For over 25 years we have made it a point to spend time on the sand bar beach strip just south of Clearwater Beach, Florida in Belleair Beach. We rent a three bedroom condo that is right on the beach. Renting a private condo allows us to save hundreds of dollars as it is less expensive than a hotel and we have all the amenities of home. We save even more money by stocking up at the local grocery so everyone can make their own breakfast and lunch. Best of all, we walk out the door and have our choice: a beautiful pool or the Gulf of Mexico. What more could you ask for?

This narrow strip of paradise sits with the Gulf on one side and the bay and intercoastal waterways on the other.

This barrier island runs from Clearwater down to St. Petersburg. There all kinds of accommodations available from high rises and hotels to smaller condo complexes or beach cottages. There is something to fit any budget. It is quiet and uncrowded but yet close to lots of activities!

When we want a break from the beach the possibilities are numerous. A 45 minute drive to Tampa and we are at Busch Gardens for a day of fun. If we want to attack the Orlando scene we get up early and make the 90 minute drive. We can spend the day at any of the Disney, Universal or Sea World theme parks and be back at the beach by 10pm.

If we want to stay local, we head 5 minutes up Gulf Boulevard to Clearwater Beach for shopping or water fun.

Centrally located in the beautiful harbor, there are boat rides, fishing charters, pirate ships, dinner cruises and even parasailing for the more adventurous. Prices are much more reasonable than in some of the larger, more commercial beach cities in Florida.

Perhaps our favorite tradition is our night at the Clearwater Phillies minor league ball field. Located about 15 minutes from the beach, their stadium is beautiful, clean and family friendly. Tickets are under $ 10 and the food courts are well stocked with the traditional ball field goodies at bargain prices. You sit close to the field and have a great chance to catch a fly ball! Players sign programs and balls for the kids. They have numerous special events throughout the season including fireworks! It has been a part of every vacation for over 20 years. Of course, you can venture into Tampa and see the Tampa Yanks play at the famous Legends Field.

While we eat home for breakfast and lunch, we explore the local cuisine at dinnertime! Always budget conscious with our big crowd, we seek out the family style restaurants. Our two favorites are in Indian Rocks Beach. Crabby Bills has to be the best seafood restaurant in the state. It casual and fun and family style. Long picnic tables covered with red and white table clothes set the ambiance. Nothing fancy but a party like atmosphere prevails. Beer and soda by the pitcher, fresh seafood on paper plates with great side like coleslaw, fries and hush puppies. It is the perfect family seafood restaurant. Stop into their fun gift shop on the way out!

The second family favorite is an Italian bistro, also in Indian Rocks, TJ’s Italian Café. Casual with delicious homemade Italian food. The pizza and strombolis are a must! It is an easy place to bring the kids no matter their age! After dinner hop next door to TJ”s Mom’s Homemade Ice Cream Parlor for dessert!

What would a family vacation be without a round of miniature golf? Travel another 5 minutes south and you will see Smuggler Cove Adventure Golf right on Gulf Boulevard. Three courses with lots of “pirate theme” holes including waterfalls and an alligator pond.

Family vacations are a great part of establishing family traditions. While our kids are all older from 20-26, we still ALL look forward to our family vacation. We start in later winter, pick some dates and everyone works their vacation schedule. They are welcome to bring along their significant other or a friend. Planning early allows for use of airline miles and assures lower fares. So this August there will 10 of us making memories at our favorite vacation spot in Florida. It will truly be a fantastic family celebration!

Transportation

When trying to figure out what type of travel plans you will be making during this holiday season, you may want to jump on the bandwagon by using vehicle transport.

Today, more people are opting to have their cars shipped to their vacation destinations versus having to load everyone in the vehicle in order to spend hours crammed in their cars. Besides this, using a service to have your car shipped has proven to be more cost effective over the long run in terms of wear and tear that is placed on your vehicle,  maintenance for your car as well as overall travel expenses.

Depending on what your situation is that requires you to travel for an extended period of time, shipping your car can actually save both time and money. For instance, a month long stay at a timeshare in Florida when you are originally from Maine is a great example of where it would make sense to pay a professional to move your vehicle for you.

Other situations that may arise include things such as: going away to college, extended vacations, corporate relocations, military transfers and more.

Perhaps the best feature is the fact that you don’t have to break the bank in order to get your vehicle where it needs to be. Think about how frequently you might have to stop on a road trip for things such as refueling gasoline, buying food, paying for hotels and sitting in traffic.  Instead, you can have your car picked up and delivered to its destination in a matter of days while you hop on a plane flight or make other travel arrangements that don’t involve you having to drive your personal vehicle.

Beach Vacation

Are you planning on heading down to the beach soon? Whether you’re flying, or you’re going to drive, there are some things that you want to keep in mind when you’re ready to head to the beach. Below, I wrote down some things that you need when it’s time to head down to the beach.

A GPS – If you’re going somewhere that you’re not familiar with, you’ll definitely need a GPS. This is going to tell you exactly where to go. The best thing that I like about it is that you can find the local restaurants and shops if you want to leave the beach for a few.

Get your hotel – If you’re going to stay in a hotel, make sure that you get your reservations ahead of time. While you don’t need to stay on the beach, it may help, so that you won’t have to drive anywhere. The price difference may be worth it.

Your camera – You won’t want to miss out on any memories, so don’t forget to bring your camera so that you can take lots of pictures!

Sunscreen – The sun will most likely be out, and without sunscreen, you’re going to be on unhappy camper.

Around me, the dollar stores generally carry it.

Coolers – Many beaches allow you to bring some food, and drinks. Instead of buying it there, I would bring a cooler, and save the money.

Blanket / Umbrella – Since you’re going to be sitting around for a while on the beach, consider bringing an umbrella, and blanket to be more comfortable.

The list can go on, but these are some of the necessities that I would consider when heading to the beach. Just get a checklist ahead of time, and make sure you get everything that you need.
